England’s Yorkshire Ashes hero Joe Root will look to bowl over diving star Jack Laugher and gymnastics ace Nile Wilson to be named Sportsman Of The Year at the 2016 Leeds Sports Awards.
Finalists for the awards run in association with Leeds Beckett University have been unveiled this weekend with three world champions locked in battle to be named sportswoman of the year in cyclist Lizzie Armitstead, diver Becky Gallantree and kayaker Claire O’Hara.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club will take on Leeds Rhinos to be named professional club/team of the year with their coaches, Jason Gillespie and Brian McDermott, locking horns to be named performance coach of the year.
Leeds City Athletics Club, Leeds Gymnastics Club and netball stars Yorkshire Jets will do battle to be named non-professional club/team of the year while the strength of the city’s diving and swimming scene is encapsulated by being responsible for four of the five finalists for the young sportsperson award.
Diver Matty Lee takes on archery ace Joe Fairburn in the male award with swimming stars Georgia Coates and Layla Black taking on Leeds’ latest young diving star and national champion Lois Toulson for the female award.
The evening promises to be another proud one for the City Of Leeds Diving Club’s head coach Ady Hinchliffe who said: “I can’t believe almost year has gone by since the 2015 awards.
“To have made the shortlist again this year is incredible and all of us at Leeds Diving are so excited to celebrate our sporting achievements on the night alongside the other fantastic clubs, athletes and volunteers in the city.”
