And no-one is more pleased by his breakthrough than Tony Carney, who coached him as a youngster for Wortley Juniors.

Tony, 49, told Wortley Today: "I'm chuffed to bits for him and of course it's fantastic for Wortley as a club as well.

"He started out for us as a centre forward but he had a go in goal in training one day and looked great.

"He was one of those lads who just had a natural talent for sport. "

David played for Wortley between the ages of seven and 11 before graduating to the Leeds City Boys squad.

The former Wortley High School pupil signed for Fulham for a reported 350,000 in 2008 after spells at York City and Darlington.

His Premiership debut came against Everton on September 13 and ended in a 2-1 win for the west London side.

David kept his place in the team for a Europa League clash with CSKA Sofia four days later which Fulham drew 1-1.

* Loiners to have graced the Premiership with Leeds United include David Batty, Noel Whelan, Alan Smith, James Milner and Aaron Lennon.
