Crossgates v Wetherby
Crossgates won the toss and elected to bat, Skipper Carl Shaw and Steve Tung opened the innings for Crossgates who made a good start to their innings with 56 on the board when the lost Tung. Soon after losing Shaw (45), then wickets were falling too frequently for Crossgates liking through some excellent bowling from Brendon Scott (4-16) and Ian Twitchen (5-40), reducing Crossgates to 121 all out.
Wetherby got off to a disastrous start losing opener Andrew Percy with the 3rd ball of Shaws first over. but with the target not too high Wetherby achieved their goal with Brendon Scott (55) helping them to a 5 wicket victory. The Division 2 champions have gone all season unbeaten.
Crossgates have had a good season finishing in the top 6 and things look good to make a serious challenge for promotion next season especially with the crop of youngsters coming through.
Walton A v Crossgates A
Crossgates A travelled to the luxurious setting of Walton Cricket Club for their final league match of the season with ten men and missing their two opening bowlers.
Walton A required maximum points from the game to keep them in the promotion picture and Crossgates were looking for revenge after their controversial defeat to Walton A in the Betty Chadderton Cup Final two weeks earlier, so the game had plenty of spice.
Crossgates A lost the toss and were put into bat on a very dry, bouncy pitch. Matt Hatherly got off to a flyer quickly scoring 20 before a loose back foot drive through the covers saw him head back to the Pavilion. With James Wilson (1) falling to the in swing of Jez Bevin, this brought 14 year old George Parkes and Mikey Ellington to the crease.
Both batsmen applied themselves diligently under great pressure, playing with good technique and gradually Walton became frustrated, changing to part time bowlers in an attempt to break the partnership.
Mike Ellington eventually fell for29 but George Parkes continued to apply himself and in partnership with Ben 'Reputation' Shaw (13 not out) reached 55 not out as Crossgates A closed on 133 for 3 wickets.
Walton A began their assault on Crossgates total in nervous fashion with Darryl Atack taking the wicket of opener John Chapman who sportingly 'walked' after a thin nick to Wicket Keeper Matt Hatherly. Walton's batsmen then went into their shells struggling to score against the disciplined bowled of Danny Blackburn 0-25, George Parkes 1-5 and Dom Anderson 1-37. At 51 for 3 Crossgates A were in with a sniff of causing an upset until Adil Mahmood (47 not out) restored confidence with some lusty blows to the boundary reminiscent of his look a like Aravinda De Silva.
Late wickets from Mike Ellington 2-25 applied pressure but Mahmood saw his side home safely with a 4 wicket win.
