Cross Gates Primary: RL team handed award

Youngsters at Cross Gates Primary School have touched down with a trophy in their first season of playing rugby league.

The pupils received the Ben Bateson Trophy from the Leeds and Hunslet Schools Rugby League chairman John Ahm and Ben's son Steve.

The trophy is named after a long-standing servant of the league and is awarded to the primary school which best symbolises the postiive values of rugby league each season, including sportsmanship and fair play.

League organiser Madeliene Hegarty said: "Cross Gates have made great progress on the field since their first experience of school rugby in Feburary.

"While the quality of their play has improved dramatically their positive attitude and enjoyment of the game has not altered, making them a very welcome addition to our events."

The club provides the opportunity for 40 boys and girls, aged seven to 11, to play the game on a regular basis after school. Throughout the season it has played 14 matches of tag and contact rugby league with schools from across the city.

Two local businesses have already supported the club. Chiltern Mills has sponsored the kit, while Ackroyds PC repairs tackle shields and books about rugby league.

Rosaleen Hamer, headteacher at Cross Gates Primary, said: "We are very proud that our children have really made the most of this opportunity to play rugby league and to show the best of what the game is all about."
