Cross Gates cricketers bowl maiden over
Estate agency manager Lesley Taylor was stumped for an answer when the lads at Crossgates Cricket Club invited her to try her hand at a spot of batting practice recently.
Lesley was at the Club to present a much welcome 400 cheque for new equipment from Manning Stainton's Crossgates branch Community Fund.
The Club was established in 1899 and brings together a diverse range of youngsters playing across seven teams in both the Wetherby league and the Leeds and District Junior Leagues.
Sponsorship Secretary Paul Dorgan says although the Club is relatively small it nevertheless has many of the overheads of larger Clubs – including umpire's fees, and new cricket balls every game at 18 a throw!
"We rely on local support to help our enthusiastic team of volunteers" says Paul, "And Manning Stainton are definitely batting for us with this donation!" he said.
And what of Lesley's cricketing prowess? After a cracking off-drive that had everyone diving for cover the most diplomatic verdict overall was that Michael Vaughan probably wouldn't be losing too much sleep over his England place!
