The Communication Workers Union, which helped fund the setting up of the club six years ago, has agreed not only to continue its funding of Cross Gates Lions FC but to increase it for this season to cover all the Club's costs for hiring training facilities.

Mark Elwen, club secretary, told Cross Gates Today: "This is a fantastic and very generous offer, we hoped they may help towards the cost but to cover the full amount was totally unexpected."
The funding has come from CWU branches throughout the North East, with branches from Lincoln to Newcastle contributing, and will be used to hire astroturf pitches to train on during the winter months.

Mark added: "The very wet weather over the previous years has meant that grass pitches are often unusable, use of an artificial pitch is a necessity not a luxury therefore, but they are expensive.
"This funding means we can continue to use top quality facilities for the coming season."
Cross Gates Lions FC Under 16s are at present seeking more players for their squad.
During the season they train on Saturday mornings and play on Sundays
