Great Scott! Mick closes in on milestone
One evergreen Aire-Wharfe League bowler has been taking the mick out of batsmen for many a year – with a milestone now in view.
Tong Park Esholt player Mick Scott has already claimed one accolade this term, taking his 1,000th wicket in the recent clash with Upper Wharfedale.
And now first-team skipper Scott, at the sprightly age of 54, is eyeing another target, smashing through the 1,500-wicket barrier in the Aire-Wharfe League.
The bulk of the wickets have been taken in three productive stints at Tong Park, where Scott has plied his trade for virtually all of the 1970s, from 1987 to 1991 and from 2001 to the present day, with the club renaming themselves Tong Park Esholt in the summer following the amalgamation of two sides.
His bowling – described as "gentle middle pace" also proved too much for many a batsman during sterling service for Saltaire and Skipton and he is still going strong almost 40 years since making his first-team debut.
Scott, who needs eight more victims to reach 1,500 wickets, said: "Reaching the target has kept me going for another season. When you get past fifty you need something to.
"I always say I'll look at things at the end of each season and I think I've said this will be my final season for the past three or four years.
"To be fair, I play for Yorkshire over-50s and I've enjoyed that and that's helped me to decide to play on as well."
