Cleck's clear-the-air talk proves a winner
A FEW choice words certainly had the desired effect for under-achieving Cleckheaton on Saturday.
The Moorenders, who have toiled for the first half of the Bradford League season after finishing in the top six in 2008, got their act together to vanquish title-aspirants Pudsey St Lawrence, reaching 219-4 after Saints had opened with 216-8.
And chairman Dave Worrell feels that a "clear-the-air" meeting ahead of the weekend reaped its rewards with Cleck hoping to use the six-wicket win as a springboard for the second half of the campaign.
Worrell said: "We had a little meeting last Thursday and it was a positive, one and I'd say it contributed a little bit to our win on Saturday.
"It was a clear-the-air type get-together for we were wanting to know why we have underachieved.
"We just feel we've been a little sloppy in our approach. The lads have accepted what is required and know that we need to be competitive over 100 overs in terms of batting, bowling and fielding.
"Some of our performances haven't been acceptable this year.
"For us, it's all about consistency. When we put up the teamsheet, I don't have any problem with who we are playing for I know we're capable of winning."
On Saturday's polished victory, Worrell added: "We knew we had to keep it tight with the ball as their batting is their strength and they bat a long way.
"We bowled in the right areas and fielded properly and to restrict them to 216-8 on a decent track, we were happy and felt it was two-thirds of the job done.
The batters did the rest."
It proved a family affair as Ian Nicholson hit an unbeaten 80, well supported by dad Neil (37no), with the pair sharing in an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand worth 66 to see Cleck home.
Gareth Clough had top-scored for Saints with 60.
Elsewhere, leaders Bradford and Bingley (184-7) claimed a three-wicket success over champions Woodlands (181), with David Clow hitting a pivotal 51 not out, putting on 60 with James Davies (26 and 4-38) and an unbroken 53 with Tykes and ex-England ace Matthew Hoggard (26no).
Scott Richardson's 51 not out proved in vain for Woodlands.
Hanging Heaton (101) prop up the rest after being soundly beaten by Baildon (102-1), skipper Ian Philliskirk (52no) seeing them to victory to re-claim second spot.
Craig Hitchenor (3-10), Mushtaq Ahmed (4-11) and Harry Smallwood (3-21) proved tormentors with Heaton losing their last six wickets for just ten runs after Haroon Rashid had hit 41.
Farsley (227-6) followed up their Priestley Cup heroics against Pudsey Congs with a win at Yeadon (225-6), with Dan Shuffe's 102 failing to yield victory for the hosts.
Farsley countered with a strong batting show, with Shabbir Rashid (63), Tykes starlet James Lee (54) and overseas man Lorenzo Inghram and skipper Dave Syers – both 37 – contributing.
Yorkshire's Richard Pyrah cracked an unbeaten 89 – Adam Patel chipping in with 63 – as Pudsey Congs (265-4) saw off lowly Manningham Mills (247-8) in a high-scoring affair.
Spin kings Glenn Roberts (4-50) and Jeremy Batty (4-62) were in the groove for Congs, who moved up to sixth.
Half-centuries from Richard Gould (56) and Shahzaib Khan (50) couldn't prevent Gomersal (215-6) from crashing to Saltaire (218-6).
In Division Two, Morley claimed just their third win of a pretty abject campaign in sensational fashion against Spen Victoria.
Spen were decimated for just 41 in 25.2 overs, with Josh Walker, who took a sublime 6-10 and Nathan Bromby (4-27) cleaning up.
Earlier, Morley had mustered 163, with Phil Carter their leading light with 46.
Maz Bhatti (5-35) and Mahboob Hussain (3-17) impressed for Spen.
A game effort from Hartshead Moor (180-9) counted for nothing as the charge of leaders Bankfoot (184-5) continued.
