Bresnan presses Ashes Test claims
Tim Bresnan pushed his claims for Ashes selection with a timely haul of 3-46 on the first day of England Lions' encounter with Australia at New Road.
The game represents the last chance for England hopefuls to showcase their talents before next week's first Test in Cardiff and the Yorkshire all-rounder wasted no time in making his pitch.
And it was an all-Tyke combination which enabled Bresnan to claim his first wicket, the prized scalp of vice-captain Michael Clarke, who drove straight to Adil Rashid at backward point for just four.
Bresnan struck soon after when wicket-keeper Brad Haddin (7) was trapped lbw and later took the wicket of big-hitting Mitchell Johnson (47), caught behind by Yorkshire target Steven Davies.
Tykes spinner Rashid failed to take a wicket in 14 overs, shipping 72 runs.
The Aussies reached 337-8 at stumps, with Michael Hussey proving the headline act with a polished 143 not out.
After losing highly-rated opener Phil Hughes and skipper Ricky Ponting cheaply, Hussey embarked on a salvage operation with Simon Katich (95) in a third-wicket stand worth 141.
After the Lions made inroads into the Aussies middle order, Hussey then linked up well with Johnson, the pair putting on 109 for the seventh wicket.
