Competition: Leeds & District Division 2
Date: Sunday, September 9
On a cool grey day the season kicked off for Colton with a match against the highly fancied Gipton Juniors at Fearnville.
The first half saw Colton begin with a penetrating left wing move involving Ben Craven, George Walker and James Green but the danger was quickly smothered by the Gipton defence.
As Gipton began to apply pressure through the centre, the Colton captain Sam Rudd, made a timely interception averting the danger.
Gipton though continued to pressurise and this resulted in two consecutive free kicks with the later being whipped to left of the Colton goal. With the early trades having been equal the game began to move in the favour of Gipton. With a strong breeze aiding Gipton during the first half it was n't long before the Colton goalkeeper, Adam Hamblett, was called into action.
This came as a result of a 10th minute corner which Adam handled well under pressure from a number of the Gipton forwards.
With the game approaching the fifteen minute mark it was no surprise that a good Gipton move resulted in the first goal with Gipton No 16 centre forward striking the ball well past the on-rushing Adam Hamblett. 1-0.
The game began to ebb and flow with the Colton captain Sam Rudd once again making a number of timely tackles and headers. Gipton were beginning to get on top at the 16th minute mark and there was no surprise when they went 2- 0 up with a well worked goal.
The Colton midfield were being over run now with Ryan White battling manfully. With able support from George Walker and Josh Gould, Colton tried to stem the tide but it was proving difficult. With the Colton forwards of James Hazelgrave and James Green finding it difficult hold the ball up it was n't too long before a returned ball found its way into the Colton penalty box with Adam Hamblett saving the first shot but failing to stop the second and that was 3 – 0 on the 32nd minute.
The Colton Manager, Big Rob Hamblett, decided a change was required and substituted George Walker for Matthew Young. Matthew went to the right side of midfield with Josh Gould coming into centre midfield in support of Ryan White. The change made little difference as Gipton made a good right wing move which resulted in a slip by the Colton keeper and Colton were down 4 goals to nil. There was little time for Colton to regroup when a Gipton attack on the strike of half time resulted in a fine save from the Colton keeper. Half Time 4 – 0.
The second half began the same way as the first, with the wind aiding Colton but it was n't long before Sam Rudd and Dalton Fotherby were having to clear yet more dangerous balls from Gipton attacks.
It wasn't until the 53rd minute that Colton had a clear strike on goal and that was when Josh Gould fired a free kick wide of the Gipton goal. The roll off and on of substitutes allowed for George Walker to return for Ben Craven and it was n't long before George was running through the middle trying to setup the twin strikers of James Hazelgrave & Green. A little altercation in the centre of the pitch lead to a bloody lip for a Gipton defender but everyone accepted it was two teams playing hard to win a competitive game.
Both Sam Bateman and Lewis Tyas were subsitiuted with 20 minutes to go. The substitution appeared to have been made to force the stale mate of the second half, rather than the fact Sam or Lewis had played poorly but rather the opposite and that proved well founded. With Ronan Whittle and Harrison Brazier making an instant impact as a move resulted in James Hazelgrave drifting into the inside right and striking a swerving ball to the right of the diving Gipton keeper. That was 4 – 1 on the 75th minute and Colton appeared to have found a little rhythm.
A couple of substitutions by the Gipton Manager, Vic, resulted in a closing down of the game and the end result being a 4 – 1 win to Gipton and a fair result .
The pre-season favourites for the Division 2 title, Gipton, getting off to a good start with Colton having more work to do before next weeks home game against Yorkshire Amateurs.
* With the first game of the season coming at the same time as the end of the Leeds & District under-15's cricket play-off final; two off the Colton players - Sam Rudd & James Green - had taken part in both sports.
Luckily for James and Sam they finished on the winning team on the Sunday morning beating East Leeds in the final in a very exciting game. The winning run being hit by a Colton tail ender, Bill Roberts, with a few balls to spare.
Congratulations to Colton Under 15's cricket team and commiserations to the under 15's football team.
