Colton Juniors 5
Yorkshire Amateurs 3
Date: Sunday, November 18
Competition: Black Prince Cup Round 2
The eagerly awaited Black Prince Cup tie saw Colton Juniors and Yorkshire Amateurs taking to the field of play in anticipation of a mouth watering prize of a home tie in the quarter finals of the cup against Calverley United.
The game had been moved from Colton's usual home pitch at Temple Newsam to the Colton Football & Cricket's newly refurbished football pitch.
A large group of spectator's gathered on a very cold wet Sunday afternoon and watched the game set off at a pace. With Yorkshire Amateurs suffering with a number of injuries they took to the field of play with nine fit players.
There were no alterations to a winning Colton team with the usual 4-4-2 formation being used.
Yorkshire Amateurs went very close in the first few minutes and followed this up with a header against the Colton woodwork. Colton then began to mount some of their own pressure and James Hazelgrave was put through by George Walker and the first goal of the match game came as the ball nestled in the back of the Amateurs net. 1-0 to Colton.
Amateurs then responded and it took a good Dalton Fotherby interception to avert a scoring opportunity. That was quickly followed up by another Amateurs attack and an equaliser. 1-1 and the game was not going to be a one sided affair as some may have thought.
Pressure was then applied by Colton and good play between Ryan White and George Walker resulted in James Green running along the left wing and neatly striking the ball past the advancing Amateurs goal keeper. 2-1 to Colton. With that Yorkshire Amateurs struck back and Adam Hamblett was down swiftly at the feet of a striker to avert an Amateurs equaliser.
Amateurs continued to pressurise the Colton defence and you could see they looked like a team playing in higher Division. Amateurs continued to look to equalise but the Colton defensive unit of Sam Rudd, Dalton Fotherby, Matt Young and Ronan Whittle did some excellent cover play and half time arrived with a score of 2-1 to Colton.
The second half started with the introduction of Sam Bateman and Lewis Tyas with the view that a fresh pair of legs would give Yorkshire Amateurs the run around.
That wasn't the case as Amateurs continued to press but Colton struck just after half time with yet another James Hazelgrave strike and a score line of 3-1.
This was after yet more neat interplay between George Walker, Ryan Brogdan & Ryan White.
Yorkshire Amateurs pressed play and Colton keeper Adam Hamblett pulled off a great save but then Colton's luck ran out and Yorkshire Amateurs struck back with a second goal and a score of 3-2.
Colton were getting a little nervous and rushed balls weren't finding their men.
You could see Amateurs confidence begin to grow and with about 20 minutes to go a great strike from an Amateurs midfielder sailed past Adam Hamblett's left hand and 3-3 was the score line.
Colton were on the back foot and had to lift there heads if they weren't going to go down at home with a quarter final game at stake. Ben Craven and Josh Gould then began to get down the wings and it was a ding dong battle.
The last 10 minutes saw Colton get the better of play and a powerful James Green left foot strike from well outside the area nestled in the back of the Amateurs net. 4-3 to Colton and the home crowd went ecstatic.
As Yorkshire Amateurs pushed for an equaliser to take the game into extra time it was the effervescent Ryan White who popped up with a good dribble and then neat right foot finish to make it 5-3.
The game was all but over for Yorkshire Amateurs and it was the home side of Colton who would progress to the quarter finals
The game was a hard fought encounter in cold conditions and one which had Yorkshire Amateurs played with 11 men, may well have resulted in a different result.
That wasn't the case thus Colton were very pleased with a 5-3 score line.
Next weekend Colton return to league action with a visit to Rothwell B.
