On a cold grey day in mid-December the last game of 2007 saw Colton take on Calverley United in the quarter finals of the Black Prince Trophy.

The game had been moved from Colton's usual home pitch at Temple Newsam to the Colton Football & Cricket's newly refurbished football pitch.

Colton started with the usual 4-4-2 formation as it had worked well this season. Early pressure came from Calverley and it was n't long before Adam Hamblett was saving at the feet of a Calverley forward.

Colton then began to apply pressure from the midfield area with Sam Parker, Josh Gould and George Walker all working well together. Just as Colton began to get more of the ball Calverley struck the first goal of the game and it was 1 – 0 to Calverley in the tenth minute.

Colton were n't about to lie down to the team a division above and a neat move resulted in James Green passing to Sam Parker and the score was 1 -1. Calverley then responded with yet another right wing move and Lewis Tyas did his up most to stop the Calverley winger getting past but the forward had the speed and struck to make it 2 – 1 to Calverley.

With half time approaching Colton clearly wanted to go in on level terms but a number of corners resulted in Calverley being strong and holding out.

The second half started with a flurry of Colton attacks, one which landed at James Green's feet and he passed to Sam Parker who finished well and it was 2 -2.

With Ryan White, Ryan Brogdan and Matthew Young playing really well it looked like Colton were in the ascendancy. On a couple of occasions Calverley broke away but Sam Rudd stood tall and defended well.

With the introduction of Sam Bateman and George Walker for Lewis Tyas and Ben Craven, Colton were looking to add fresh legs to the final push.

Ryan White continued to tackle everything that moved and this led to a ball breaking onto the left wing where James Green ran on to it and struck a left foot shoot to the goalies left hand and it was 3-2 to Colton. Colton appeared to be heading for the semi final stage of the cup and an upset.

With less than 5 minutes to go it was Calverley pressing hard. Once again Sam Rudd, Dalton Fotherby and Adam Hamblett were doing terrific rear guard action.

Colton then went down the other end and both the James's of Hazelgrave and Green could have wrapped the match up but both efforts went wide when it was easier to score.

There was a sting in the tail to this match as Calverley, against the run of play, equalised after a gallant save by Adam Hamblett.

That was 3-3 and Colton heads appeared to lower. With the onset of extra time it was Calverley who stole the match in the final minute.

It was a missed tackle in midfield that left the Calverley player with a shot of about 25 yards which sailed over the Colton keepers head and it was a 4-3 victory to Calverley.

Whilst Colton appeared to be the better of the teams, and in particular in the second half, this was a tough learning experience for the 15 man squad.

With players like Ronan Whittle and Harrison Brazier providing excellent support whilst not getting on to the field of play, it was a disappointed Colton team that left the pitch.

Each and every player knew they'd played as they could on the day and but for a little bit of luck going Calverley's way, on another day it would have been Colton in the draw for the semi finals.

Next year's fixtures start with Colton hosting Garforth Rangers on the January 6, 2008.

For the time being Happy Christmas and Good Luck in 2008 to all the readers of this weekly column.

Squad: Adam Hamblett, Sam Bateman, Sam Rudd, Dalton Fotherby, Lewis Tyas, Josh Gould, Ryan White, George Walker, Ben Craven, James Green, James Hazelgrave, Ronan Whittle, Harrison Brazier, Matthew Young & Sam Parker.
