Castleford Tigers: Matterson's joy at French tonic

VICTORY in France has made Castleford Tigers feel smiles better, coach Terry Matterson admits.

Tigers toughed out a 20-16 win over Catalans Dragons in Perpignan to end a four-game losing run.

"It feels a lot better," Matterson said of the mood in the camp following Cas' second success of engage Super League XV.

"We needed it. They (Catalans) probably did as well, but there can only be one winner.

"It was good for us. We have come out of it really healthy, a couple of young guys played their first game and got the experience of winning, our heads are up and we enjoyed the trip."

Matterson was pleased with the way his team – including debutants John Davies and on-loan Mike Cooper – defied the odds in the second half.

"There was a gale-force wind and we ran with it in the first half," he said.

"We were awful, we were down 10-6 at half-time and had a huge job on because it was a 12-14 point wind.

"They were really happy going into half-time, but we turned it around.

"We worked hard, Rangi Chase, Ryan McGoldrick and Stuart Jones led the way and the others followed. It was a good win."

Tigers were without centre James Evans who did not make the trip due to a quad injury.

But Matterson expects him to be back for Sunday's visit of Wigan.

However, winger Shaun Ainscough will not be allowed to play in that game, under the terms of his loan move from Wigan.

Meanwhile, McGoldrick has been cautioned by the RFL for "kicking out twice when tackled" during last Saturday's game.
