BRADFORD CITY: Engine room is next as McCall steps up plans to revamp City

BRADFORD CITY boss Stuart McCall is on the hunt for midfielders as the summer hots up ahead of 2009-10.

McCall recently brought in new striker Gareth Evans from Macclesfield but missed out on the signing of Sheffield United's Nicky Law who has joined League Two rivals Rotherham United.

Now the former Sheffield United number two is targeting other options in the engine room, as well as a new custodian between the sticks.

"With missing out on Nicky Law, we'll need one midfielder, if not two," the former Scottish international conceded.

"The budget is at its limit but central midfield and obviously a goalkeeper we'd hope to get someone on loan from one of the higher division clubs."

Two players Bradford have been linked with are Darlington's former Huddersfield striker Pawel Abbott and former Town winger Marvin Kamara.

McCall is also hoping to tie up a new deal for right winger Joe Colbeck.

Talks are ongoing and McCall said earlier this week he was confident of the 22-year-old agreeing new terms.

"Because Joe comes up to 24 in a few years' time the club have to safeguard that, so he doesn't leave for nothing," said McCall.

"Joe loves this club and should sign a new deal in the next few days.

"It's about getting the right length of contract and the details right to ensure he doesn't walk away from the club for free in a few years' time."

McCall is not as hopeful of bringing back last year's loan star Dean Furman.

"We've done everything possible to get him here again, but I think he will be joining a higher division club unfortunately," he said.

"That's if those clubs can come up with the money Rangers are asking for.

"We've waited a little while and hoped we could get him, but as much as we've tried I don't think we'll get him back."

The Bantams are now less than two weeks away from kicking off their pre-season which begins with the eagerly awaited hosting of Premier League new boys Burnley on Saturday, July 11 (kick-off 3pm).

City then take on Bradford Park Avenue for the Tom Banks Memorial Trophy at Horsfall Stadium on Wednesday, July 15 (7.45pm).

The following Saturday – July 18 – sees Bradford visit KitKat Crescent to take on York City (3pm) and on Saturday, July 29, McCall's men host a Yorkshire derby against Simon Davey's Barnsley.

Trips to non-league outfits Alfreton Town and Hyde United await the following Tuesday and Wednesday evening (both 7.45pm), before the Bantams end their pre-season warm up at home to Carlisle United on Saturday, August 1 (3pm).
