sharky’s ABC founder Leroy Brown believes his former protégé Nicola Adams is destined for at least a silver medal at the London Olympics.
Adams’ rise up the junior ranks at Burmantofts ABC has been well documented, but coach Brown also played an important role in the ring star’s early development.
Brown remembers like yesterday Adams’ first embarking on the sport in his gym and says he knew all along that she had the raw talent to succeed.
The 29-year-old begins her quest for Olympic glory next weekend, looking to add an Olympic medal to her two World championship silvers and one European Championship silver.
Brown concedes that world number one Ren Cancan is the woman to beat but insists he has good reason to believe that his gym star can prove the Chinese athlete’s undoing.
“We are very proud of her and I think she’ll definitely get to the final,” said Brown of the flyweight ace.
“If, as expected, she comes up against the Chinese girl it will be tough one, but if she has a good final the judges might just give her the vote.
“Nicola is bound to be very nervous but she’s just got to believe in herself.
“It’s all about her having the right attitude – if her attitude is that she’s not good enough then she won’t succeed – but Nicola is made of stronger stuff.
“She’s got to believe she can do it and I believe that she can. The whole of Leeds is behind her.”
