West Leeds Amateur Boxing Club hit the headlines at Sunday’s Yorkshire Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE) elite finals with two champions in Dammo Jones and Ryan Taylor.
Jones, who has just turned 18, beat seasoned international Tom Knight (Hull Fish Traders) 15-12 and the 67kg fighter now has 41 wins from 45 bouts.
Taylor, boxing at 63.5kg, beat Jaimie Samson, of Sheffield Lane, and then Andy Townsend, who represents England, to land his title and his record now stands at 62 wins in 80 fights.
Both Leeds scrappers are now only two fights away from an ABAE elite final, much to the delight of former pro boxer Danny Thornton who now runs as pro at West Leeds.
Thornton said: “It was a really good win for Dammo, as it was his first senior contest, while both the lads that Ryan fought have really good pedigrees.”
Both tackle opponents from Birtley next, Jones’ facing Craig Dixon andTaylor up against Danny Philips.
