Leeds-based Tigers ABC Gym are hailing their latest and newly crowned national champion Mali Wright.

Chapeltown-based Wright, 20, won the 81kg class of the England Boxing Development Championships at Rainton Meadows in Sunderland.

On the road to glory, the Leeds fighter boxed six times in six weeks – beating three undefeated boxers on the way – with his toughest assignment coming against another Leeds boxer, Jordan Morris of Sharky’s ABC, in the Yorkshire final.

Wright – a student at Leeds Met University – will now have time off over Christmas and start training again in January with a view to the University cChampionships in February. Wright’s sparring partner, 15-year-old Tom Wilson, began his bid for Junior Novice Championships glory on Thursday evening in Sheffield. Tigers ABC coach Jason Gledhill said: “The fact that Mali beat another Leeds boxer in the Yorkshire final proves the strength of boxing in Leeds at the moment.”

Another Leeds boxing star, Bob Ajisafe, successfully defended his British Light Heavyweight Boxing Belt last Saturday evening.
