With the shortest day already behind us and the new year only days away, renewing or deciding on which membership books to buy for the coming year becomes top of the “to do list” for most of us.

Over the next few weeks with the usual reports I will try to give a brief ‘what’s on offer guide’ from our local associations.

Leeds & District boasts a massive portfolio of venues with something for everyone. Once a match-oriented society they now look to be slowly changing track aiming like the other big clubs to provide for everyone.

Top venues include, both banks of the river Swale’s iconic Topcliffe Mill and Weir, Asenby and its famous island swims with Helperby further downstream making up three brilliant chub and barbel venues.

Nidd anglers are well catered for with the once neglected Hammerton, Skip Bridge and Moor Monkton lengths producing good summer catches with access and on-bank parking work planned to make things even better.

Wensleydale’s Middleham fishery on the river Ure owned by the club offers trout and grayling to the fly with the chance of a running salmon at a fraction of the cost of nearby beats. As the Ure turns to the Ouse, Hunters Lodge, Linton and Nun-Monkton are probably the best known of the river system’s Leeds waters.

Still waters include Sandwath Lake, Kippax Polo, Knotford Lagoon and the Wintersett complex – all capable of specimen sized fish.

Moor Monkton Pools bought outright by the society only this year has produced huge match and pleasure catches in its first season, but has more to offer than just summer carp crunching with some massive winter perch falling to lobbies or the now fashionable dropshotting technique.

The local Kippax Park Fishery, though only offering a ticket concession, also comes with the Leeds book and offers brilliant summer and winter fishing for beginner to expert.

Adult full membership (unattached) is £54, OAPs and disabled £26 and juniors £17. The club also offer to members a yearly £10 Moor Monkton permit that gives permission to fish without purchasing a day ticket at the venue.

Bradford No1 AA is another angling giant with miles of river, canal and stillwater fisheries catering for match, specimen and pleasure angler with a thriving junior section. Top venues include the River Nidd’s superb Cowthorpe Fishery both above and below the weir capable of producing massive catches and individual big fish, Gatenby and Thornton Bridge to name just two of the association’s Swale venues, regularly produce big summer catches.

Add the Derwent, Ouse, Wharfe and Aire to the list and all anglers’ styles are covered. Stillwaters include the prolific Knotford for carp up to 30lb and bream to double figures, Queen Mary’s ponds at Ripon for some big tench in SSSI surroundings, and Raskelf Lake proving the stocking of F1s to be a great success with catches of over 100lb now common.

Costs for 2016 will be: adults £48, OAPs £28 and juniors just £5.

A new members joining fee of £20 (excluding juniors) can be expected with a second rod permit available at £16. With the required rod licence fees, subscription to the Angling Trust and membership to miles of rivers and still waters working out at less than a pint of good maggots or bad casters per week is there another sport comes close to giving value for money?
