Members were taken by surprise recently as Leeds & District’s president of 12 years Stan Jefferys announced he would be standing down with immediate effect.

His resignation given at the election of officers meeting following the society’s AGM, gave the top job unopposed to Whinmoor’s Paul Roberts.

Knowing both men well, it’s easy to predict that the running of one of England’s largest angling associations will change dramatically, as the two personalities are as different as chalk and cheese.

Often accused of seeing the world and angling through different glasses to others, Jefferys reign has seen the Leeds club come through some controversial and difficult times, with the sale of Catterick’s five lake complex, the acquisition of Kippax Park and the purchase of Moor Monkton Pools (formally Carpvale) have been just part of a legacy that I know he is proud of.

If success needs a total opposite then Leeds have appointed the perfect president in Paul Roberts. Less well known nationally than his predecessor but a life member with years of experience at committee level, he is a man that will stand his ground in any company and always insist that things be done in the right way.

Dave Rushton takes up the role as vice president and fisheries liaison officer, his enthusiasm for everything above and below water level could be the start of the perfect partnership and members could see some massive changes. I certainly hope so and good or bad I will let you know.

Top quality winter grayling fishing has been hard to find over the last few seasons with anglers struggling for the odd fish on some of Yorkshire’s best rivers.

Local venue Linton on Wharfe is also thought to be in the doldrums and difficult to access from the Leeds side due to the year-long bridge closure, and has bounced back with a bang giving those in the know terrific sport of up to 30 fish per session.

Overgrown pegs and hard to navigate banks were tackled at the weekend by Forum AC, angling volunteers hoping to show others what is on offer just a few miles from our city centre.

The pacey and shallow waters of Linton are best tackled with traditional running line and the stick or waggler with maggot as feed and hook-bait, though a small maggie feeder with a change bait of a tiny piece of worm will produce bites when the grayling turn difficult.

If you own a centre pin reel and have got rusty having nowhere to use it, try Linton it’s perfect for it.

Flood waters reaching 10 feet above normal level greeted match anglers at the draw for last week’s big money three-day midweek festival to be held on the Ouse and Ure around Aldwark Bridge.

With the contest cancelled on the morning and quickly rearranged for a date in March, a number of floodwater specialists decided to stay on and fish for the three days anyway. No matter what the conditions, there will always be a winner and it didn’t take much on the first day for Tackle 2 U member Pete Barron who won with just 14 ounce.

Bradford’s Bob Foster won the second day with a single 6lb barbel, and Craig Turbitt finished off the week with three big roach on lobby for 4-00 proving bites are possible even in the toughest winter conditions.
