Angling: Nerveless teen Jacques nets first open match win

Winning your first club competition is something you remember for a long time, winning your first open match stays with you for life, young Dean Jacques has guaranteed himself some great memories.

The 17-year-old apprentice electrician from Sherburn-in-Elmet, under the wing of his company boss and angling mentor Sean Cameron, last week took on some of the country’s best – and proved himself top of the ‘Class’.

The three-day festival, in aid of the Help for Heroes charity and run like clockwork by Tony Tarff and Doncaster AA on its prolific Southfields Reservoir, was always going to need something special to win.

Fishing to his gaffer’s plans of the tried and tested feeder, worm and fishmeal-based groundbaits between two lines of 30 and 45 metres, Jacques’ first-day catch of 30-12 from peg 50 gave him a zone win and a place at the top.

An early run of hybrids on his 30-metre line and some proper skimmers from his longer chuck late in the match from his Day-2, peg-1 draw, gave him a weight of 37-3 and second in his zone.

It’s at this stage even the best can feel slightly nervous; going into the final day on three points and drawing next to former world champion and England feeder-team manager Tommy Pickering, he could have been excused for ‘blowing up’.

But 17-year-olds don’t ‘do nerves’ and, though Mr Pickering put over 50lb of big bream on the scales, young Jacques stuck to his plan and weighed 38-14 for another second in zone, giving him a five-point total and an impressive festival win at the first attempt.

As if to prove that your boss is always right, Shimano and Dynamite Baits-sponsored Sean Cameron made sure he wasn’t on tea-making duty when the pair returned to work, putting in a near-perfect performance to win the final day individually with the festival’s highest weight of 63-9.

Anyone who fancies honing their bream-fishing feeder skills on a big, wild water, then Southfield is probably the best fishery of its type in the North of England. Backing onto the Aire and Calder Canal at Beevers Bridge near to the village of East Cowick and under the control of Doncaster AA, day tickets are available.

If you’re high-tech and know how to make your sat-nav work better than me, enter DN14 9AD and it will take you right to the bank – and you wont be disappointed.

If you have a match or just going pleasuring on one of our local commercials over the next couple of weeks, don’t forget your coshida and paste. With the weather warming and water temperatures rising, carp are now on to big mouthfuls, a string of wins and placings for Farnleys Dave Pollitt proving they’re hard baits to beat.

His last four weights from Kippax Park, Moor Monkton and Poppleton lakes going 119-8; 123-0; 112-6 and 93-0, showing how good these cheap baits can be on a variety of venues.

At less than £5 for a day’s bait bill, you can’t afford not to have a supply in your bag.

Saturday, June 11 will see Yarnbury AC hosting an under-16s junior match on the popular Weeton Lakes Fishery, see match diary for details.
