After the confirmed case of KHV at Leeds & District’s Kippax polo pond, the society this week suffered more bad news at their recently purchased Moor Monkton Pools situated on the outskirts of York; a small, but unexplained number, of carp have died over the past few weeks, raising concerns over another viral outbreak.

On-site fishery manager and Leeds president Stan Jeffreys said this week that the deaths had been reported to the area’s Environment Agency (EA), which is arranging for samples to be collected and sent to laboratories for testing.

At the moment, Mr Jeffreys (together with EA officers) does not think it is the Koi Herpes Virus and is swaying towards a dietary problem caused by the excessive amounts of cat and luncheon meat baits used by visiting anglers.

My own question would be: Why, when the site consists of three lakes with the same baits and quantities used, are the carp deaths restricted to the one front pool? The lower autumn water temperatures would make KHV unlikely, though other emerging diseases such as KSD (Koi sleepy disease) or CEV (carp edema virus) should be checked for as outbreaks have been observed at temperatures between 7-15c which are similar to those at the fishery’s lakes at the moment.

After recommendations from the Agency’s Brampton facility, the controlling delegates of Leeds Amalgamation decided, at their latest meeting, to close the complex until results of the problem have been received.

The Bob Co Yorkshire winter league, meanwhile, fished through the lower Aire’s sections of Chapel Haddlesey and Beal, and again produced some strange catches for this unpredictable river.

Winner Andy Miller, of Bradford’s Tackle2u, produced a catch more likely to grace an estate lake. Drawn below the weir on peg 152 alternating between an 11-metre pole and a chopped worm feeder set-up, his 6lb of river-regular perch were topped up with three eyebrow-raising tench, scaling almost 10lb to give him probably the first-ever River Aire tinca-based match win with 15-12. Second-placed Terry Guthrie, of Halifax, matched the winner in the exotic species race but not on weight.

He put a pristine carp of 12lb on the scales to give him the bulk of his 12-12. Dave Pilgrim, fishing for team winners Barlby Village Stores, took third with a more familiar 9-8 river catch of roach and perch.

Yarnbury AC hosted their final match of the season on the Derwent at Low Catton, York. It was the club’s annual teams of four open challenge. On arrival, competitors found the river carrying extra water and coloured heavily after recent floods.

Undeterred the match went forward with Yarnbury’s own team committee coming out on top. Captained by Adie Addy, all the squad took second place in their respective sections, giving them a total score of 12, edging out Queen’s Arms Dry Baggers by a single point.

Top individual on the day was Queen’s Arms’ Craig Stafford off peg 30 in the shallows. He worked the stick and caster, taking three chub for 5lb 15oz.

Section winners were: A, Steve Parsons 11oz; B, Dave Atha 8oz; C, Craig Stafford 5lb 15oz; D, Paul Taylor 4lb 15oz.

The club’s presentation evening will be held in the Old Ball public house Horsforth, on Saturday, November 7, from 8pm.
