"It's absolutely amazing," said Brownlee, who has won four of the seven World Championship Series events this year. "I couldn't have asked for anything more.

"Every athlete in every race wants to win and I really wanted to win the world title.

"I was lucky I started swimming and running so young but I'm also very lucky to live in Yorkshire.

"I was going to give it everything and I was delighted with how the race went."

Brownlee finished in an official time of one hour, 44 minutes and 51 seconds with Gomez in second and Beijing Olympic gold medallist Jan Frodeno of Germany taking third.

The next Britons to finish after Brownlee were Will Clarke and Tim Don who claimed 11th and 16th places respectively.
