Michael Vaughan failed with the bat against Kent in his first match for Yorkshire since resigning as England captain.
Looking for runs to show that he warrants a place in England's future Test teams, Vaughan could only score 10 at Scarborough.

He came to the crease immediately after tea as Yorkshire replied to Kent's first-innings score of 227.

Vaughan found the boundary with a fine leg-glance off Robbie Joseph which went close to wicket-keeper Geraint Jones and got four more with an edged stroke to third man off Amjad Khan.

But after facing 19 deliveries he chased a ball outside off stump from Joseph and Jones held on to the thick edge as he hurled himself in front of first slip.

Vaughan's opening partner, Andrew Gale, also departed for 10 when Joseph pinned him lbw, but Anthony McGrath and Jacques Rudolph saw Yorkshire safely through to the close at 85-2 and trailing by 142.

Put in to bat on a humid morning, Kent struggled and only the in-form Martin van Jaarsveld mastered the attack before being last out for a faultless 107 off just 139 deliveries with 15 fours and two sixes.
It gave him 1,000 Championship runs for the season.

The only other Kent batsman to manage double figures was opener Joe Denly, who gave a couple of chances on his way to making 50 from 65 balls with seven boundaries.

Yorkshire's Deon Kruis soon made his mark with two wickets.

Late movement away from the bat first accounted for Rob Key, who edged to wicket-keeper Gerard Brophy and Neil Dexter then speared a ball to McGrath, leaving Kent on 36-2.

Darren Gough trapped denly lbw and although van Jaarsveld settled in well, batsmen continued to struggle at the other end and Darren Stevens departed to Rana Naved-ul-Hasan when he presented McGrath with his second catch.

Yorkshire cashed in with two further wickets soon after lunch, Matthew Hoggard having Jones caught behind while Ryan McLaren was run out by Adam Lyth's direct hit on the stumps.

James Tredwell contributed only nine before he was lbw to Gough and the slide continued as Khan clipped Hoggard to Vaughan at square leg.

Joseph helped van Jaarsveld to add an invaluable 30 for the ninth wicket but Rashid then had the tail-ender caught off his glove by Gale at short leg.

The innings closed when van Jaarsveld was trapped lbw by McGrath.
