The Wales manager has to wait almost four months before he can get his squad together again and has just four friendlies left before the Euro 2012 qualifiers start next September.

It is a long time for things to go wrong after spending five years trying to rebuild Wales from the ground up, and there have been plenty of problems along the way.

Toshack was facing calls for his dismissal at the end of another unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign last month.

But the 3-0 victory over Scotland has given him hope for the future and he wants the youngsters to grow and improve at their clubs, in particular the outstanding Aaron Ramsey and strikers Simon Church, Ched Evans and Sam Vokes, who is currently on loan at Leeds United.

He said: "Ramsey did well and there was a spark of an understanding with Simon.
"When they played together last season against England Under-21s, Aaron made three goals over two games for Simon, it is something I hope blossoms in the future.

"What we have to do is make sure that things are right behind him. We experimented with Ashley Williams in a holding role in our previous match in Liechtenstein and it worked well with Aaron having a free role ahead of him.

"We tried it again against Scotland and it worked okay again. Ramsey was further forward and we felt what we were trying looked positive.

"The front lads did very well. Church and Evans are both playing regularly for their clubs while Sam Vokes has got a good loan move to Leeds where he is also benefiting from matches.

"The three of them really occupied the Scottish defenders, they all played their part and worked really hard."

Church, Vokes and Evans joined up with the Under-21 squad yesterday for the European championship qualifier in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Wednesday, although Ramsey's back injury rules him out of the match in Sarajevo which could see Wales qualify for the play-offs.
