One man's misfortune is another man's gain and Mark Bunn is simply relishing being Sheffield United's number one.
Now the loan star only wants to get his current club back in England's number one league.

Bunn is United's current undisputed first-choice keeper with Paddy Kenny still serving a nine-month ban for testing positive for the banned substance ephedrine.

That unforeseen blow has led to boss Kevin Blackwell fielding three different keepers this term but it is Blackburn Rovers understudy Bunn who has emerged as the favoured stopper.

Signed on loan from Ewood Park at the start of the season, Bunn originally joined Bramall Lane for a month but the Blades' goalkeeping problems have led to the 6ft ace twice extending that spell and he will now remain at United until the end of the season.

Even for Bunn it hasn't quite been plain sailing this term, the shot-stopper starting United's opening games but then being dropped after a dip in form, with first Ian Bennett and then Carl Ikeme used instead.

The loan star admits the demands of the Championship got the better of him but he soon regained his form and is now very much the Blades' preferred choice.

Bunn is unclear what the future holds, with the 25-year-old set to return to Ewood Park in the summer and Kenny also on his way back to Bramall Lane.

All Bunn knows is that right now he's Sheffield United's number one and whatever the circumstances it is something he is very much enjoying.

"I'm loving it," Bunn told Yorkshire Sport. "I'm just really enjoying playing at the moment.

"It's my first season in the Championship and it's good to be playing regular first-team football for a change.

"It's been tough. I've had my ups and downs and I went through a bit of a bad spell where I'm not used to having so many games.

"You play loads of games in the Championship and I feel like I am progressing now, the more games I am playing, and I feel like I am becoming a better goalkeeper.

"I'm enjoying my time here and hopefully I can improve as a keeper and we can get into the play-offs as well this season."

Asked if the ins and outs of Kenny's suspension and appeal were unsettling, Bunn said: "Not really, and the lads have been great with me.

"We have got a young team and I have settled in really well.

"Paddy Kenny is a great goalkeeper and it was uncertain not to know what was happening with him. But he won't be back now until next season so I can just play the rest of the season and see what happens.

"It's a massive team Sheffield United and it's a great confidence -booster to be playing week in, week out at Sheffield United and to be the number one goalkeeper.

"Hopefully, I can carry on playing well, push them into the play-offs and then we can see what happens."

Despite having turned 25 last November, Bunn still has relatively few miles on the clock in terms of first-team experience.

Born in Southgate, Greater London, and beginning his career as a trainee with Tottenham, it was at Northampton Town where Bunn's talents blossomed with just over 100 appearances coming between 2005 and 2008.

It was in the last of those – a League Cup win at Bolton in August 2008 – that Bunn shone brightest, forcing Paul Ince to splash out on his services as back-up to Paul Robinson.

Bunn has made just the one FA Cup start for Rovers since his signature – at Blyth Spartans – but admits it is nevertheless a huge honour to be classed as a Premier League player.

Explaining his move to the big time, Bunn revealed: "I was playing well at Northampton and there were a few clubs watching me.

"I played against Bolton in the Carling Cup, I had a good game to be fair and after that I signed for Blackburn close to the deadline day.

"It was quick really, and it's just good to be involved with such a big club.

"I think every young player wants to be in the Premiership – I think that's what everyone works to do – and I'm really enjoying it at Blackburn.

"I'm just grateful that I have come on loan to Sheffield United really to get some more first-team experience."

Bunn also admits he has gained invaluable experience at Ewood Park alongside Robinson, even without playing more than the one game.

"He's a great goalkeeper and obviously he's involved with England and that," said Bunn, who has also had short loan spells at Kettering and Leicester City.

"You are training with him week in, week out and you are only going to be a better goalkeeper for that.

"I learn from him in training as well and I can look at how to improve myself as a goalkeeper if I go and take things off him and put them into my game."

Bunn's progress is certainly showing at his current temporary home, progress that may give Blackwell food for thought about a permanent switch, even with Kenny's impending return.

Bunn is keeping his options open regarding the future.

Said the keeper: "I don't really know too much about what's going on next season but if I go back to Blackburn that's what will happen, but if not I will see if I can get any offers in the summer and that would be great for me.

"I will wait and see what happens but I think every goalkeeper wants to be in the Premiership.

"If I go back to Blackburn I will work hard and see if I can get in the team but if not I will just see what happens in the summer.

"If another team comes in for me then we'll just take it from there."
However, one conundrum of which Bunn is sure is that his current club are more than good enough to reach the Championship play-offs.

Citing an improved away record as a crucial factor, he reasoned: "I think we've got a great chance and we seem to be improving as a team.

"We have picked up some great results and hopefully we can get a couple more wins.

"We are a great team at home, we just need to improve our away form at the moment. I think if we can do that then for sure we will be in the play-offs."
