Toopi had a year left on his contract, but has agreed a release after undergoing knee reconstruction surgery which could keep him out of action until next summer.

Rhinos' players were told of Toopi's departure in the changing rooms after last night's record-breaking 52-16 win at Wigan Warriors.

Sinfield said: "Clinton's been fantastic for us and he will be missed.

"He's been great to have around the place, as good an overseas signing as we've had.

"He's a great character, he's always got a smile on his face and he trains the house down.

"He's a special friend, we all wish him all the best and hopefully he'll be back playing for someone soon."

Toopi's latest injury came in the Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final defeat by St Helens a month ago, just three games into his comeback from a dislocated shoulder suffered in the World Club Challenge win over Melbourne Storm on February 29.

Coach Brian McClennan said: "We're all bitterly disappointed for Clinton. That is the hard part of the salary cap, it leads you to have to make tough decisions in the interest of the whole team.

"Clinton will go home with two winner's medals and lifetime friends.
"He will always remember Leeds fondly and we wish him and his family all the best for the future."

Toopi, left, will return to his native New Zealand after undergoing medical checks in September and is hoping to join another club next spring.

He said: "I have really enjoyed my time here and I will miss the Rhinos very much. I am not only making this decision for me and my family, but also for the team. I understand the team need to have a starting centre ready and available for the start of the season.

"We have been under pressure this year because of that and I want to help the club move on and give them a chance to fill the centre position and put in concrete plans for 2009."

Toopi joined Rhinos from New Zealand Warriors in July 2006 and scored 10 tries in 47 appearances.

Meanwhile, last night's win was Leeds' biggest-ever at Wigan and McClennan reckoned the nine-try route was another step forward for his improving side.

"We're starting to play our way back to form," said the coach.

"We're doing some positive things and it's great to see all the players smiling and feeling the joy.


"We've been through some frustrating times and not playing how we like to play, but we are getting there and making progress, though we've still got a lot more to do yet."
