James, 36, landed the first prize gold award in the competition's Photographer of the Year category.

His portfolio included pictures of police undergoing riot training and a music fan having a muddy marvellous time at last year's Leeds Festival.

James, who has worked at the YEP for 12 years, said: "It's a privilege to be recognised in this way.

"I think my pictures give a good indication of the range of jobs people working at a newspaper have to tackle."

Steve, 56, scooped a bronze award in the Sports Photographer of the Year category.

His entry included shots of former Leeds United manager Dennis Wise enjoying a post-match victory 'huddle' with his players and Leeds Rhinos star Ian Kirke in topsy-turvy rugby action against Wigan Warriors.

Steve, who has spent 29 years at the YEP, said: "A good sports photo is all about capturing a moment and getting something that sums up the game or occasion. It's a challenge - you only have one chance to take the picture you want. That's why it's nice to receive this recognition."

The Newspaper Society is a trade association representing and promoting the interests of Britain's regional and local press.

Its CEP Awards recognise excellence in the industry and were held this year at Crewe Hall in Cheshire.
