Portrush air show, Ulster
An air show organiser from Leeds will receive an award for his dedication – six years after he was supposed to retire.
Jeff Brownhut, 71, organises the Northern Ireland International Air Show, which drew 380,000 people in September.
The event in Portrush has been praised for bringing together people of different religions and now Jeff, of Bramhope, will receive the 2008 Air Display Association award for "long and outstanding" service. Jeff and wife Sue, 68, have also organised major air shows in Leeds, including Metro 75 at Roundhay Park and the 1981 British Outdoor Show World Championship, also at Roundhay Park.
Mr Brownhut said: "We were suppose to retire six years ago, but organising the show is a year-round job. I'm already organising next year's show. It's a real honour to be recognised in this way."
Mr Brownhut has passed his love of aviation onto his two daughters, Georgina, 35, who is working towards her pilot's licence and Naomi, 39, an Alaska Airlines flight attendant.
Jeff and Sue started organising major events in the 1970s, after selling their fancy goods business, B&H Retail Discounts which had shops in Otley, Ilkley and Beeston.
They recruited Ken Dodd and Frankie Vaughan to appear at their events, which attracted millions of people each year.
