Gary Hetherington insists former England fly-half Henry Paul will prove a talismanic leader for Leeds Carnegie – with the Kiwi's shock signing announced this morning.
The 34-year-old confirmed another dramatic switch of codes at a press conference today and is understood to have agreed a two-year deal.

Paul – currently in his second stint in league at Harlequins – will join up with Carnegie once his current deal with the Londoners expires in September.

And Hetherington confirmed that Carnegie had to fight off stiff opposition from several French clubs to land Paul.

Carnegie chief executive Hetherington said: "Henry had made his intentions clear it was going to be his last season in rugby league and that he wanted to see out his career in rugby union.

"He's somebody who Stuart Lancaster has lots of time and admiration for. We also feel he can also bring a lot of quality, experience and leadership to the group."

He added: "There were a number of other clubs, including several in French rugby union, who wanted to sign Henry. But I think he enjoyed his time in Yorkshire and coming back here was an attraction. He's a big-name signing and a quality player and person."

Speaking this morning, Paul said: "I had a great stint at Harlequins. I was looking to get back into union and bringing this team back from National One to the Premiership is a massive goal.

"I started my career in Yorkshire (at Wakefield) and this will be my last contract. I'll finish my career here.

"I'll give my heart and soul over the next two years to hopefully get the team back up."
