Cult 1960s Yorkshire-based film classic Kes is to be recreated for the stage in Bradford next week.
The Alhambra Theatre will breathe new life into the haunting story of adolescence and growing up with Billy Casper and his kestrel, Kes, which was originally filmed in Barnsley.
The cast includes Leeds actors Stefan Butler, who plays Billy and Katherine Dow Blyton who starred as Sally Hunter in TV soap Hollyoaks.
They are joined by David Crellin who was Billy Hopwood in Emmerdale, Mike Burnside who spent nine years in The Bill and David Casey, best known for his role as Sergeant Troy in Midsomer Murders.
Jonathan Bowdin, marketing officer at Bradford theatres, said: "Kes has been doing really well so far for a drama because of its local angle and popularity in Yorkshire and we hope that can continue."
The story, based on the novel A Kestrel for a Knave, follows Billy's troubled childhood in a coal-mining town and his struggles in life with a bullying older brother, Jed, and unaffectionate mother.
Billy is bullied at school and deprived at home.
His escape from the torment comes from adopting an injured kestrel chick which he learns to raise and trains.
The film won critical acclaim in the 1970s picking up a number of awards.
The social commentary and classroom politics mixed with witty humour made it successful on screen and the Alhambra will be hoping to convert these successes to the stage.
Kes will run from November 10–14.
