Codebreaker Simon Worrall is staying at Leeds Rhinos, but team-mate Nick Scruton has signed a three-year contract with arch-rivals Bradford Bulls.
And Castleford Tigers today completed the signing of back-row forward Stuart Jones from Huddersfield Giants, while Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear will announce his retained list for 2009 next week.

Worrall, 23, joined Rhinos from their rugby union sister club, Leeds Carnegie, last year and has agreed a new 12-month contract after being granted club-trained player status by the RFL.

"I am really pleased to have agreed the new deal," said back-rower Worrall, who has made 14 senior appearances this season.

"Once my status was cleared up by the RFL, Leeds approached me about a new contract and staying at the Rhinos is what I wanted.

"It's a great opportunity for me to have another year at the club and work with Brian McClennan, Francis Cummins and Willie Poching to keep developing my game."

Worrall hailed conditioner Jason Davidson for converting him into a league player and revealed that physio Meirion Jones played a major role in earning the new contract, by getting him back into action after a troublesome shoulder injury.

The Doncaster-born player added: "I'm delighted with how things have worked out. When I first got in the team it was initially because of injuries in the squad, however I think I am there on merit now and being awarded a new contract is a big confidence boost for me.

"I want to get bigger and better next season. I know I need to bulk up in pre-season, my shoulder has restricted the amount of weights I can do this year, but hopefully that will be sorted out and I can concentrate on improving even more."

Team boss Brian McClennan hailed Worrall's "fantastic attitude".

He added: "How far he has improved is testament to his dedication.

"His switch is a remarkable achievement and a good example that if you apply yourself and you are prepared to listen and learn off your coaches and team mates, you can make progress.

"He is looking to keep improving and he is a terrific person to have in the camp.

"He is so enthusiastic and is very popular among the players, who trust him that he is always going to give his best.

"That is a great trait to have and he is someone we are glad to have in our squad."

Meanwhile, Bulls coach Steve McNamara says 23-year-old Scruton – who turned down a contract offer from Leeds – will make a big impact when he joins Bradford next season.

Scruton has made 96 appearances for Rhinos, 25 this season, and McNamara said: "Nick has been playing in a very strong Leeds side for the last three or four years and has gone very well.

"I'm really pleased to able to bring him to the Bulls and also by the fact that he wanted to come here to Bradford.

"Nick's young, English and has got a great deal of ambition, while he still has plenty of improvement in him.

"He is tough and fit and a very vocal player who will add a lot to our pack next year. I'm looking forward to working with him.

"He's someone who bases his game on his sheer love and enthusiasm for the sport and he is a great addition to our squad."

Scott Donald (ribs), Jamie Jones-Buchanan (hamstring), Ryan Bailey (ankle) and Ian Kirke (foot) have all been named in Rhinos' initial 19-man squad for tomorrow's derby at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, after injury.

Worrall drops out from the team which won at Wigan two weeks ago.

Wakefield boss John Kear has named Duncan MacGillivray – who will retire after tomorrow's match – as captain for his farewell game.

Sean Gleeson and Paul Reilly – who featured in the win at Catalans Dragons last time out – are missing from Kear's 19-man squad.

Wildcats' 19-man squad: Blanch, Martin, Atkins, Rooney, Brough, Watene, Drew, Sculthorpe, MacGillivray, Demetriou, Petersen, Bibey, Henderson, Wilkes, Leo-Latu, Grix, Golden, Bibb, Pitts.
