Peacock: Cats derby is perfect preparation

Tonight's derby at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats is perfect preparation for Leeds Rhinos'play-offs campaign, England skipper Jamie Peacock believes.
According to Peacock, Leeds are looking for a tough run-out ahead of their opening play-off tie, against St Helens in 14 days'time.

Wildcats have only pride to play for, but Peacock believes they will bring their A-game into their final match of the season.

"Wakefield will put up a good performance, I am sure," predicted the Leeds front-rower. "It's their last game, they're at home and they won't want to get beaten by us.

"It's the right sort of game for us. If it was at home it might be a bit easier, but going there is always difficult and (coach) John Kear will have them pumped up, I would imagine.

"We need to play as well as we possibly can and we feel we need to step it up again."

Rhinos could pip St Helens to top spot in the table if they pull off a big win this evening and the current leaders slip up at home to Wigan Warriors.

That's not a focus for Rhinos, according to Peacock. He said: "We just need to keep our form going and take it up a notch. If we do that, the result will take care of itself.

"We can only control what's controllable. The Saints result is something we can't worry about. We will just concentrate on ourselves and putting in a good performance building into the play-offs. That's what we need to do."

Rhinos have had a two-week break – their first of the year – since the record win at Wigan last time out.

Peacock admitted everyone in the Leeds camp would rather have been in action last weekend, in the Carnegie Challenge Cup final, but he feels the lay-off may prove a blessing in disguise.

"The good thing about not being (in the final) is you get a break and time when you don't have to think about rugby at all," he said.

"We get another break next weekend, but then you are thinking about the play-off coming up."

Rhinos could be boosted tonight by the return of winger Scott Donald, prop Ryan Bailey and back-rower Jamie Jones-Buchanan, after injury.

Said Peacock: "Just seeing them training again gives everyone a lift and it'll be fantastic to get them back.

"Scotty's been on fire this year and Bails and Jonesy add steel to the side. All three of them are boys you want to play with and I am looking forward to it."

Meanwhile, prop Nick Scruton has spoken of his decision to join Rhinos'arch-rivals Bradford Bulls, on a three-year contract beginning next season.

Scruton said: "I have been having sleepless nights trying to come up with the right decision.

"It is something I have thought long and hard about and spoken to my family about.
