A SMALL club with big ambitions – Nostell Miners Welfare are targeting the second round of the FA Vase tomorrow with victory at Ashton Athletic (3pm).
Nostell are fifth-bottom in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division but have already made history by winning their first ever FA Cup game – against Winsford United – before narrowly bowing out in the preliminary round.

Now manager Alan
Colquhoun wants progression in the Vase tomorrow to further raise awareness of his former West Yorkshire League side.

"We made club history by beating Winsford in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup and gave a good account of ourselves in the prelim against UniBond team Warrington Town," he said. "Our aim now is to get through to the next round of the FA Vase.

"It's the biggest cup at our level and, apart from the financial rewards, staying in as long as possible raises the profile of the club."

Colquhoun doesn't know too much about Welfare's opponents, but is aware they are a young, progressive side who beat North West Counties Premier high-flyers Glossop North End 2-0 last week.

"They are a fair outfit with a number of ex-Wigan trainees in their ranks," said Colquhoun. "It will be a tough game but it is one which we can win."

Also in Vase action tomorrow are Tadcaster Albion, who will be hoping some of manager Paul Marshall's cup magic rubs off at home to Spennymoor Town.

Marshall steered Harrogate Railway to the FA Cup second round in 2002 but Taddy are out of this year's FA Cup and are currently second-bottom in NCE League Division One.

Leeds Carnegie visit Ashington, while leaders Liversedge are away at NCE League Premier Division rivals Thackley.

In the NCE Premier, Armthorpe Welfare visit win-less Eccleshill United while, in Division One, Pontefract Collieries travel to Askern Villa and Yorkshire Amateur host Staveley Miners Welfare.

In the UniBond Premier, third meets top as Guiseley travel to leaders Ilkeston while Bradford Park Avenue visit Boston United.

Third-bottom Ossett Town visit fourth- placed Ashton United and Frickley Athletic host a bottom-of-the-table clash with Cammell Laird.
