STEVE KITTRICK is hoping his homework pays off after swatting up extensively on his new Guiseley signings' attributes – both on and off the pitch, writes LEON WOBSCHALL.
The Nethermoor boss, who saw his side fall away from play-off contention last term, has opted for experience and character in his bid to find a promotion formula with the team ethic central to his mindset.
Kittrick, whose side kick off at home to promoted Cammell Laird in the UniBond League Premier Division tomorrow, said: "Other teams may have signed a player who say has scored 30 goals and others who have done this and that, whereas we've been a bit more selective.
"We don't want a team of individuals doing what they want, we want players who will gel and work together.
"It's not just about reputations. We've spoken to people about what the players are like off the field and what there character's are like, which is important.
"We've got to have lads who want to play for each other.
"We had five players earmarked that we wanted, but they weren't right for us. It's about what they want out of football and it's not about money.
"We want a certain type of employee here. In pre-season, there's been a good rapport and camaraderie and that says a lot about the set of lads who've been together only five or six weeks.
"We've gone for experience with the likes of Lee Crooks, Adam Muller and Steve Burton. They all had good offers to go to other clubs at a higher level but they've seen what we are trying to do here and wanted to be part of it."
Kittrick added: "Expectations are very high. The people who pay the money want promotion.
"We've set our sights at a minimum of the play-offs. The maximum would be to win it.
"But we're under no illusions. You get things such as injuries and dips in form during the season and it won't all be a bed of roses.
"On paper, we've had a good pre-season but that can count for nothing if you lose two of your first three games in the first week."
The club have confirmed tomorrow's game definitely goes ahead despite a fire in the early hours of Sunday morning which damaged parts of the main seated stand.
The stand will be closed, but the rest of the ground will be open.
Elsewhere, title favourites Bradford Park Avenue host Prescot Cables, while Ossett Town entertain Hednesford.
Frickley visit Witton Albion.
