EARLY pacesetters Bradford Park Avenue may have been scoring goals for fun so far this term – but keeping the back door shut is what matters to boss Dave Cameron.
Big-spending Avenue are fully living up to the hype, put their way by a host of pre-season tipsters who have backed the Horsfall Stadium side for UniBond Premier silverware, and how.
Two thumping 4-0 victories over Prescot Cables and Matlock have
seen Avenue set a scorching pace, and they will be aiming to make it a hat-trick at Hednesford Town tomorrow.
Cameron, who brought in 13 new players in the close-season following Avenue's promotion from First Division North, said: "The lads are playing well, but the biggest thing for me has been two clean sheets. That's my forte and fair play to the defence and goalkeeper. Clean sheets are the most important thing at this moment and we've been delivering."
"The likes of Darren Hockenhull have come in from Stalybridge and he's always been a very good non-league player at the back. We've also brought Carl Ruffer into the back four and he's the new captain, and he's also got lots of experience.
"Up front, Chris Hall has scored three in his first two games, despite not training for three weeks. He's been different class."
Not fazed at all by the soaring expectation levels at Avenue this season – or worried about a host of potential rivals in the slightest – he added: "Without being disrespectful, the only thing I'm bothered about is Bradford Park Avenue. For me, it's all about keeping our own house in order and I've not really thought about other teams really.
"It's better to have a job where you can open the cheque book, rather than be scrimping and saving. (Chairman) Bob Blackburn and the board have backed me completely, so I can't complain on that score."
Elsewhere in the top flight, sixth-placed Frickley host Marine, the only side with a 100 per cent record other than Avenue.
Ossett Town go to Cammell Laird, while Guiseley will also be eyeing three points on Merseyside at Prescot Cables.
Whitby go to Matlock.
In First Division North, early leaders Ossett Albion host Clitheroe, while FC Halifax Town – whose assistant-boss Nigel Jemson scored the midweek winner at Trafford – go to Lancaster.
Rock-bottom Garforth entertain Curzon Ashton and Wakefield and Harrogate Railway head to Rossendale and Trafford respectively.
Goole are at Shepshed Dynamo in First Division South.
