A PETITION in support of the Breastfeeding Manifesto was handed to MP Hilary Benn to mark the end of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week in Leeds.

The petition, signed by more than 400 women, was presented to the Leeds Central MP and International Development Secretary, who recently announced his intention to stand for the post of deputy Labour leader, at Osmondthorpe One Stop Centre.

The petition, organised by the Leeds branch of the National Childbirth Trust, was one of many activities to mark National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, held across the UK last week.

Kathryn Holme, chair of Leeds NCT, said: "Hilary wouldn't sign the petition but said he supported the cause. He said he'd get back to us once he'd spoken to other ministers.

"We've raised the profile of breastfeeding and encouraged more mums to breastfeed in public."
