AN ONLINE oral history of Rugby League is set to be launched.
Six months after it began, Huddersfield University's Up and Under Rugby League Oral History Project is to unveil its website.
The three year project is funded by an £85,000 university grant and aims to preserve and celebrate Rugby League heritage
in West Yorkshire by recording personal memories of the sport's rich past.
Project manager Rob Light and student helpers have done the interviews.
Mr Light said: 'One of the first interviews to be included on the website is with Stanley Pickles who, at 96, is the oldest person to be interviewed so far. Stanley first watched Leeds in 1915, when just five-years-old, and has remarkably vivid memories of the club's major matches and players during the 1920s and 1930s."
His reminiscences can be heard at www.rugbyleagueoral history.co.uk along with a selection of audio clips from five of the other interviews.
A web page provides background information and photographs for each of the clips, which are around four minutes long.
Mr Light said: "All the interviews provide a fascinating insight into the sport's past from different perspectives and listening to these extracts provides a perfect opportunity for fans of the game to sample some of the intriguing and insightful memories that are being collected."
The project is on the look out for more contributions from anyone who has been involved in the game.
