MANY thanks to the Yorkshire Evening Post for covering the Football v Homophobia event (YEP, February 24).
However I would like to say that the event, organised by Republica Internationale FC which saw them play in special black and pink T-shirts, was more than honouring the memory of Justin Fashanu.
Anyone who knows the story about Justin, the UK’s first and only openly gay professional footballer in the UK, will know that he faced enormous amounts of discrimination from colleagues, supporters and opponents due to his sexuality.
Among the tens of thousands of footballers in the country, there are still many who are too afraid of publicly admitting they are gay.
Our campaign, and the annual international Football v Homophobia initiative, which has the backing of the FA, PFA and Uefa, is about raising awareness and ensuring that the beautiful game is one we can all share, regardless of sex, race or religion.
I hope your readers will not miss this point.
Thank you again for the coverage.
