Undermining John's hard work

John Egan, the park keeper of Woodhouse Moor, received an MBE in the last New Year's Honours list for his many years of service to the oldest public park in Leeds.

It was a well-deserved honour, as he can be seen at 7am, in all seasons and weathers, cleaning up rubbish which thoughtless people (including barbecuers) have left in our beautiful green park.

And how do our local councillors show their appreciation for John's hours of work, much of it unpaid overtime?

They are threatening to deface the green grass with concrete blocks set deep down underground, which will change the appearance of the moor forever!

Have any of the councillors (or council officers) asked John whether he wants this "designated barbecue area"? Why don't they spend the money that the ridiculous scheme would cost on extra park staff to draw attention to the byelaws (on display on notice boards) which state clearly: "No barbecues or bonfires"?

John Egan MBE does his best to keep Woodhouse Moor an open green space for everyone to enjoy, so long as they follow the advice (to paraphrase from last year's Glastonbury) "Love the moor, leave no trace."
