Trolley folly a waste of millions

REGARDING your story headlined '£800m ghost town' (YEP, June 22), another shambles.

Cast your mind back to the ill-fated bid for Leeds tram which I believe cost Leeds 42m, another big loss to taxpayers.

May I alert the people of Leeds to another multi-million pound folly, the NGT or New Generation Transport.

This is an improved route for public transport from Bodington to Stourton and St James's Hospital.

By prioritising the route and park-and-ride at Stourton and Bodington journey times should improve – the flaw in the system is the use of electric trolleybuses.

I am informed each unit will cost 3m to 4m and will be of the bendy-bus type.

Add to this the miles of overhead wires and when in town junctions, the mess of wires will be like a spider's web!

Also, special housing for maintenance will be needed for the trolley.

I say yes, improve the Bodington/Stourton routes, I say yes to both park-and-rides, but no to trolleybuses.

The simple solution is to use natural gas-powered buses which give off no fumes, can be bought at a fraction of the cost and are "off the shelf".

Marks & Spencer use a fleet of gas-powered wagons to good effect!

I Say stop 'trolley folly' and save Leeds millions of taxpayers' money.

JO NEESOM, Leeds.

* Leeds are thinking of having a trolley bus system. If it's anything like the tram system we were promised it won't take place. I think it's a waste of time.

They could spend the money on something more worthwhile. Put other things first like schools and hospitals.
