Tricky issue for political elite
"SHAME", "disgrace", "a scandal" scream the editorials and the media headlines at the election of the BNP to the European Parliament.
Many of us feared this and it's "we told you so" time and "that it was bound to happen sooner than later".
The reason? Mass uncontrolled immigration.
It was not just a protest against MPs' expenses, it was the thousands of anxious people turning to the far right in desperation because the three main parties will not admit what is self-evident to the rest of us.
However, now that the BNP have been democratically elected to a parliament – achieving more than Oswald Mosley could dream of in the 1930s – are the media going to continue banning them to shut them up?
No amount of rotten eggs and brawling will silence them, only devastating reasoned argument and debate in a parliament chamber or public forum.
Will we ever see them on Question Time for instance?
Other 'fringe' parties are given air time – so bring them on and expose them under the searchlight and see what the "one issue" BNP are made of.
They aren't going away now – bankrolled with public money – and neither is the vexed question of immigration and asylum and until the political class face up to these issues, many more desperate voters will vent their anger in backing the only group who is listening to them.
