Letters roundup: Students speak out over bus services
I AM writing on behalf of the students at Leeds University Union to voice our concerns over the state of bus travel for students in Leeds.
We, in collaboration with Leeds Metropolitan Student Union and Leeds Trinity Student Union, are launching a campaign to try to improve the cost and reliability of the service available. The campaign has three main aims:
Reliability of buses. Too often buses are late or simply don't show up at all.
Increased frequency of buses serving outlying areas of Leeds. The 97 bus, for example, is the only bus that stops at Leeds Trinity and other parts of the local community – yet at peak times, there is one bus every 20 minutes, which is often full.
Fairer pricing for all Leeds students. The Green Zone bus pass scheme does little to help students, as those that travel by bus most often are those that live outside it. Termly and monthly passes are expensive and do not allow students to receive discounts if just making occasional journeys. We are calling for a universal student discount which applies to all university and college students throughout the year.
The campaign has already received many messages of support from students and non-students alike. We ask that people pledge their support at http://www.leedsstudentbus campaign.com/ This site also allows anyone to lodge a complaint with First. Together we can sort this problem.

Leeds: litter city
I SO much agree with the letter from E Hillyard, regarding the dirty streets of Leeds.
I cannot comprehend why some people think it's ok to toss their rubbish in the streets, which is sometimes left to fester for weeks or months by the council.
I would like to see them clean properly and more often.
To pay for it, fines should be imposed on those who do not keep the front of their premises tidy.
The last time I saw a sweeping brush being used outside a shop was in Germany where the streets are spotless in spite of very few bins.
Out of curiosity, for the past year or so, I have made a mental note of who these dirty people are that I have witnessed throwing litter down.
I was flabbergasted to find that, out of the 23 litter louts I counted, 20 of them were young women, some with young children in tow.
Needless to say, unless something positive is done, we will be ashamed of 'Litter Leeds' for a long time to come.

Treated with care
I recently spent two days on Ward 49V at Leeds General Infirmary and could not have received better care. The ward staff were warm and friendly. The theatre staff put me at my ease with their kindness and professionalism. There is also praise for surgeon Mr Horgan.
