Letter: Why Grayson had to go...
I WAS surprised at Reading manager Brian McDermott’s sympathy for Simon Grayson not being afforded the luxury of buying the best players.

Brian hasn’t been given that luxury either but with investing in his acadamy and some astute signings he has achieved success.
Grayson took United as far as his ability allowed him. He signed six centre backs and six strikers; he needs a minimum of two keepers, so, in his squad of 30 players, he has 14 players covering three positions – which leaves 16 players left in his squad to cover eight positions, plus the bench, plus injuries.
Bates does the finances, he is good, that’s why United are still afloat. Simon Grayson did the rest of the on-field stuff and that’s why Leeds United are not in contention. I am only glad Grayson didn’t do the finances as well.
