Letter: That’s another fine mess we’ve got into

It is so reassuring to know that we have Stan and Ollie – sorry, that should of course say Dave and George – running the country.

When they took office growth was crawling along at a measly 1.2 per cent. Without breaking sweat they have managed to shrink this to an impressive minus 0.2 per cent. At the same time they have made significant progress towards emulating the unemployment levels achieved by their ideological guru, Mrs Thatcher. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of utterly unnecessary jobs have already been shed, in such wholly redundant services as the NHS, the pollice, and the armed forces. This is, of course just a taste of what the greedy, grasping public servants can expect in the next few years as they are forced to realise that they – sorry, we – are all in it together.

There has also, let us not forget, been considerable progress in the government’s drive to break up the NHS and to sow the seeds of the privatisation which has always been a key objective for Tory politicians. If there was no mention of this in the Tory manifesto before the election, if indeed they promised the very opposite - well, that’s tough.

So, I say congratulations to Cameron and Osborne. Loyally supported by The Three Stooges – Clegg, Cable and Alexander – they truly are the Laurel and Hardy of British politics. We should tug our forelocks and thank our lucky stars for the fine mess they are landing us in.

B Bradley, Kirkstall, Leeds
