The children that are born drug dependant will be scarred for life by the ill effects of these drugs. In any other circumstances giving children drugs would be dealt with very severely.
Even passive smoking is now outlawed, yet giving an unborn child drugs via the umbilical cord seems to be accepted without being challenged. Some of the mothers involved are on methadone, so they are certainly known to the health service.
Perhaps in the future the health service will be sued for millions of pounds for not acting on behalf of the unborn child, the health service should ensure that potential mothers that are addicted to drugs are on effective long term contraception.
Failure to do this will result in poor and a potentially dangerous environment for bringing up a young child.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 11:13 AMThe thing that we should not do, is nothing. Multiply the 100 in the Leeds area country-wide and its thousands of babies that will be destined to with in poverty and ill health.
Lock up thieves - it stops them robbing
Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 10:34 AMthe suggestion is: "ensure that potential mothers that are addicted to drugs are on effective long term contraception". The mother in question felt guilty about the pain suffered by her fourth, fifth and sixth children. I hope she is successful in her attempt to get off drugs.
