Letter: Let’s stand up to European Court

Once again, British justice, already the laughing stock of Europe, has been dealt another blow by the European Court of Human Rights, which, overturning a court decision here to extradite a disciple of the late Osama Bin Laden, has completely ignored the recommendations of our judiciary system.

Hatemonger, Abu Qatada, who spouts his hatred towards the country which has sheltered him since his arrival here might (unlikely) face torture in Jordan. Despite a joint agreement signed by the British and Jordanian authorities to the contrary, Strasbourg says we are unable to offload him.

Now freed on bail, he remains just as big a threat to UK security and a continued drain on police security resources.

When is this country going to stand up to Europe and do what the French, Italian and other countries do? Why do we accept such inept decisions from Eurpe, when others interpret them differently and act accordingly? Why is our “Human Rights Watch” so naive and effete in its acquiescence to Brussels?

As the commentator Douglas Murray said on Newsnight recently “extradite him as other countries would and accept Europe’s slap on the wrist”.

How much longer are we going to put up with these ludicrous decisions from Brussels and Strasbourg? Whatever happened to David Cameron’s pledge last year to introduce a British Bill of Rights? Merely empty, electoral rhetoric.

R Miller, Leeds

If we were outside the EU we could also choose not to be part of the Council of Europe and ECHR.

But the ECHR covers many more countries than EU members. If we weren't in the EU we would still be under the jurisdiction of the ECHR as it was set up following WWII.

But, to be a member of the EU you first of all need to of signed up to the Human Rights legislation.

@whirlygig, I couldn't have said it any better. You would think if people take the time to write to a paper they would do even the most basic of research into their daily mail like rants. Anyway, I'm not sure if this link will work when I post it but this is a good explanation to explain the EU and the ECHR are not the same thing - http:www.mailwatch.co.uk20111031a-tabloid-friendly-guide-to-the-eu-and-echr

And when will ranters realise the European Court of Human Rights has absolutely nothing to do with Brussels or the UK being an EU member?
