Letter: Leading by example
I am not a fervent royalist by any stretch of the imagination,
although I was at one time but Queen Elizabeth has devoted her whole reign to this country and will do so, I am certain, for the rest of her life, leading by example and having lived through many years which have all been glorious

Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 04:19 PMShe has lived a life of absolute luxury paid for by ordinary men and women whilst 99% of the population struggle to make ends meet. The monarchy is an outdated, evil, divisive system which should be assigned to the history bin. How can we ask our children to go to school to do well as a system of meritocracy will reward their hard work, and on the other hand allow somebody else to live a silver plated life of luxury by virtue of who's womb they passed through? No doubt the usual arguments of "they bring in money", "they bring in tourists" etc will be trotted out. If a monarch brings in so much money why doesn't every country without a monarch simply install one? We could even get Simon Cowell to make a show and ask viewers to phone up to select who they want to represent them.
