Letter: Devastating attack on those in need
THE decisions made in the House of Lords, recently, have exposed the welfare reforms for what they really are.

The attitude of the current Government seems to be that we ignore the views of the majority and please the minority.
There will be devastating consequences for many vulnerable people – including cancer patients and disabled children.
The proposals do not consider the extra stress and difficulties for cancer patients and their families. Does this Coalition Government have any skills to empathise with such situations which people do not request to have imposed on them? How are severely disabled children expected to build up National Insurance contributions when they have never been able to work?
It was a relief to see the House of Lords object to the proposals of eliminating Employment Support Allowance. If our young people with severe disabilities are not entitled to support, who are?
The House of Lords has clearly demonstrated their compassion and common sense. It is sad to think that this may be short-lived due to the lack of understanding and the thoughtlessness of our Coalition Government.
Every service which is a “rock to support our society” seems to be suffering from a hard hammer hitting it and fragmenting our crucial services. Save our services which were put in place to allow that support when needed and make sure the views of the majority are listened to.
Our NHS is becoming bitterly attacked and we need to ensure that vital state services like this are maintained and well supported to ensure that we can continue to promote our healthy and well developed professional assets and look after our society. We have always been able to be proud of such services and it is sad to see the attack they are currently under at this time when the need is probably greater.
Councillor Karen Renshaw, Labour, Chapel Allerton
