Letter: Train ambition

Councilor John Procter’s letter on the need for a tram system (YEP, November 12) signals the sort of vision and ambition which the Leeds City Region so badly needs. No matter how wonderful the new generation of trolley buses may be, they have always seemed a timid and parochial approach.

West Yorkshire needs a modern ‘steel on steel’ rapid transport system, allowing all its centres of population and employment to be accessible by journeys measured in minutes, and decongesting the road system for commercial and industrial traffic. Experience in similar regions throughout the world demonstrates the extent to which such transport systems can help to attract investment, generate jobs, and improve the environment.

The need now is for political leadership of the kind demonstrated by Councillor Procter, not humble acceptance of second-best solutions.

JOHN BALE, Balmoral Way, Yeadon, Leeds
