Letter: Protect our greenfield sites from development

I read with horror the article ‘Land Banking Crisis - Leeds Homes Shortage - Builders Stand Accused’ (YEP, November 12).

Apparently greedy house building companies have bought up greenfield sites and are sitting on them in anticipation of making even higher profits. But its not the fact that NO development is taking place that bothers me, its the fact that these are GREENFIELD sites! We are apparently awaiting the destruction of vast areas of green open spaces. I recall a few years ago we were promised that green areas would be protected and that no greenfield developments would take place until brownfield sites were exhausted.

We are now looking at 21,000 houses MORE in Yorkshire. Not only that Leeds City Council Planning Department are no longer going to object to these applications! Why? Because Whitehall has overruled each appeal as some considerable cost to the Leeds council tax payer. So now we have NO protection and a free for all for greedy developers to do what they want. This is criminal! Our wishes are not being taken into account.

John Friskney, Holt Park, Leeds
